Jim Cutter, president of Cutter Construction, Inc., has been committed to strengthening his community and building trust with people from many backgrounds throughout his personal and professional life. In addition to owning and operating one of Northern Kentucky’s most successful, full-service construction companies, he is a past president of the Home Builders Association of Kentucky and an active member of several private, foundation, and nonprofit boards. Jim’s desire to give back to his community and help others grow holistically has been nurtured by a lifetime of learning the principles of servant leadership.
Jim, the only son of the late Ralph and Jessie Cutter, grew up in Newport, Kentucky. After his father’s passing when he was three years old, his mother worked several jobs to support the family. Jim learned first-hand the value of hard work and perseverance through Jessie’s example. He graduated from Newport High School in 1978 and, having turned down a draft offer from the Montreal Expos, pursued a collegiate baseball career at Northern Kentucky University. Jim earned a degree in construction management from Northern Kentucky University in 1981.
After several years working as a manufacturing manager for the General Electric Aircraft Engine Business Group, Jim founded Cutter Construction, Inc., in 1993. The two-division company—with Cutter Custom Homes handling new, custom home projects and Cutter Construction offering remodeling and commercial building services—has prided itself on being able to take on any size of project in any budget category. Over the course of more than 30 years, Cutter Construction has successfully undertaken numerous multi-million-dollar projects across Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati. Jim and his company have received over 300 industry awards for their superior craftsmanship, attention to detail, and unsurpassed customer service.
Jim has invested himself in the future of the homebuilding industry. In 2006, he served a term as president of the Home Builder’s Association of Northern Kentucky. Despite serving many other roles in that association and winning its Builder of the Year Award in 2003 and 2016, Jim is most proud of his receiving the Donald M. Wiedeman Lifetime Achievement Award for dedication, loyalty, and service to the association and industry in 2007. Further, the Better Business Bureau of Greater Cincinnati bestowed he and his company the prestigious Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics in 2011 to recognize his emphasis on honesty and trust with customers. These lifetime achievements, however, have not prevented Jim from continuing his service to the industry. He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Home Builders for several years, and, in 2013, he completed a term as president of the Home Builders Association of Kentucky. In 2015, Jim was named Home Builder’s Association of Kentucky Builder of the Year.
Finding time amid a busy schedule to give back to his community has been Jim’s strength. He has coached and sponsored over 30 youth sports teams and has always prioritized giving back to young people’s growth. This approach has also led Jim to help people—not just youth—develop themselves through the power of education. He previously served in advisory capacities to Newport High School and Newport Central Catholic High School and is a past president of the Alumni Council at Northern Kentucky University. Jim was the inaugural president of the NKU/Cincinnati State Construction Management Program. Jim continues to serve on the Construction Management Advisory Board at NKU and is currently the board chairperson.
In whatever way he can, Jim has dedicated himself to helping other people. Whether to improve athletic ability, educate themselves and their children, or build a dream home, Jim works at every angle of life where someone could use advice and a strong example. He is a certified mediator in Kentucky, and has donated his time and company resources to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and has served on the foundation boards of the Campbell Lodge Boys Home, the Covington Diocesan Catholic Children’s Home, Campbell County YMCA Branch Board, the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission 2030 Advisory Committee, and the American Heart Association of Greater Cincinnati, and a past president of Kids Voting Kentucky.
Jim continues to serve as a dedicated board member to the following: Make-a-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana Board, Buenger Boys and Girls Club of Newport, Campbell County Park Advisory Board, NKU College of Business Deans Advisory Board, and a Board Trustee of Kentucky’s Association General Contractors Self Insurance Fund. Capitalizing on all of his experiences, Jim launched Just in Time Connections, a motivational coaching group that helps individuals and organizations build relationships and trust. Jim is a co-founder of NaviGo College & Career Prep Services, empowering and coaching students towards their college and career path.
Above all, Jim is most grateful for the guidance and support of his family. He and his wife of 40 years, Connie, are the proud parents of Seth, Mariah, and Hope. Jim and Connie are also blessed grandparents of four grandchildren, Collins, Merritt, Tripp, and Campbell. Nothing brings Jim greater joy than watching his three children become kind and philanthropic adults in their communities.
